Why staying stuck feels safer than choosing

Hi Reader

She sat on the call and said: "I know I need to make a decision. I just don't know why I can't."

We were 10 minutes in.

She'd been circling the same decision for months. Talked it through with friends. Journalled. Made pros and cons lists. Still stuck.

I asked: "What happens if you don't decide?"

She paused. Then quietly said, "Nothing changes. I stay exactly where I am."

"And how does that feel?"

Another pause. Longer this time.

"Safe."

There it was.

Realisation she was stuck because staying where she was felt safer than choosing. It had nothing to do with not knowing what to do.

That's what hiding often looks like.

Safe behind "I don't know."
Safe behind "I need more information."
Safe behind "I'm still figuring it out."

After last week's email, I noticed something familiar.

24 of you clicked through to the Hide & Seek Sessions. One person booked. Some of you also bought the reflection guide I released on Thursday. Maybe you've completed it. Maybe it's still sitting in your downloads folder.

Either way, it's the same pattern.

Looking feels safer than doing. Knowing feels safer than acting. Waiting feels safer than choosing.

But after doing this work for 20+ years, I can tell you that you won't suddenly feel ready. You won't wake up one morning with perfect clarity, not afraid and ready to go.

You just choose anyway.

The woman on the call wasn't ready. She was afraid. But in 45 minutes, we untangled it, because she stopped waiting to feel ready.

By the end, she knew exactly what she was choosing, and why she'd been hiding from it.

I have 4 Hide & Seek sessions available in January across 2 Wednesdays.

After that, there's nothing until March.

45 minutes. £150. We catch where you're hiding and what the real you wants instead. One deep, honest session to see what's underneath the performance.

My Dad used to say: "It's either important, or it's not. You choose."

If you're done hiding, book a session and see what happens when you choose.

💛I switch the light on inside, so the 'real you' can shine softly from within. For over 20 years I've helped people shed the layers that aren't theirs, the job titles, the roles, the expectations, and remember who they actually are underneath. If something in you is done hiding, you're in the right place.

Hi Reader I'm sitting in it right now. My morning chair. The one that catches the sun first. I have my coffee, my comfort blanket (not because I'm cold, just because it feels right) and I'm looking out the back windows at the birds doing their thing. It's bright today. Really bright. Even though I can see the frost still on the ground. The windows need cleaning. I notice that. And then I let it go. It's not a dreamy house or a dreamy world I live in. It's just mine. And this quiet bit at the...

Hi Reader I took these two photos over the last couple of weeks. Both blue skies. Both beautiful. Both in January. They look almost the same at first glance. But one was Manchester at 5 degrees. And the other was Barbados at 29. Same surface. Very different experience underneath. And that’s been on my mind lately. Because this is exactly what happens when something big is going on inside us. From the outside, life can look fine. We’re functioning. Turning up. Doing what needs doing. But...

Hi Reader It's that time of year when everyone's counting down to the Christmas break. My clients have been saying it too: "I can't wait to press pause." But here's where I get curious (as always). When I challenged them about what pressing pause truly means for them ...that's when it all came out. Yes, some are pressing pause to recharge. To spend time with loved ones. To rest before stepping back into work they actually enjoy. But for others, when we dug deeper, the real reason surfaced....
